Use of Antibiotics!

While I was reviewing the material, I realized that the narrative around 'antimicrobial products' is extremely dangerous from an environmental health perspective. I can hear the saying, "Kills 99.9% of germs," repeating in my mind as I write this blog! The use of antibiotics has the potential to wreak havoc on society, although we may not immediately see the consequences. The most alarming piece of information among this week's readings was that individuals living near livestock may have an increased risk of infection by methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). As a consequence, communities all throughout the Central Valley of California where I grew up are at risk. In conjunction with the fact that many of the individuals in these communities are of lower socioeconomic status, it's clear that this is an extremely complex issue.

  1. Definitely a complex issue, but so real about the disproportionate impact of those in lower communities. It sucks that the individuals most impacted by this are the ones that do not have a seat at the table to make any tangible issues.
