One of my roommates is a medicinal chemist at a pharmaceutical company. After asking him about some of the chemicals he uses every day, he mentioned that I should complete this blog assignment on sulfur trioxide.
What are the health risks associated with this chemical?
In a relatively dry atmosphere, sulfur trioxide is an odorless vapor that is extremely corrosive and can burn through multiple layers of clothing due to reactions producing sulfuric acid into the environment. Additionally, because of its corrosive properties, sulfur trioxide can cause serious burns if inhalation or ingestion occurs.
Is the chemical a carcinogen?
So far, the chemical hasn't been classified as a carcinogen.
What personal protective equipment or special precautions should be taken when working with this chemical?
Protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, and face protection are extremely important precautions to take when working with this chemical. Additionally, the chemical should be handled using a special ventilation system that can reduce the potential for harmful effects.
If this is a chemical found in your workplace, what training/education were you given about any risks associated with this chemical?
My roommate mentioned that he received extensive training and education on all potential risks associated with sulfur trioxide. He continues to receive education on all chemicals that he handles.
I think the MSDS for sulfur trioxide provided a substantial amount of information on preventive measures that individuals can take when handling this chemical. As a chemist, my roommate understands the importance of safely handling substances that may cause immediate harm to an individual.

It sounds like your roommate has a strong understanding of the safety implications of that specific chemical. It would be interesting to understand if this chemical is prevalent in other workplaces that have a more limited understanding of chemicals and the dangers that they bring about.
