Biomonitoring!

Hey y'all!

If I were to receive hypothetical test results that indicated these potential health effects due to toxins found in a blood/urine sample, I would be extremely concerned. My initial question for my physician would be, "How did I come in contact with these toxins?" However, perhaps most concerning, is that my physician would have no idea how to answer that question. These toxins have the capacity to produce detrimental health effects throughout my body, including my nervous, endocrine, and reproductive systems. Because we come into contact with many of these toxins on a daily basis, I would want to know exactly how I could reduce my exposure. Again, however, I'm not sure that a physician would know exactly how to address my concerns. It's upsetting to know that these environmental health exposures aren't being taken as seriously as they should be. After reflecting on these results, I wouldn't be surprised if I actually did have these toxins in a real blood/urine test, if I were to have one tomorrow. Today's lecture made me feel so many different emotions, especially while listening to the guest lecture. I felt frustrated, melancholic, stressed, and fearful for our future.

  1. Hey Adam!

It's is sad that most doctors (not truly knowing if this is true or not), but I feel most doctors would not know what to do with information like this or even how to help you understand where these chemicals came from. So often we read labels on products and see these long complex names of chemicals we don't understand and just assume they are okay. It is frustrating that there isn't a system in place to educate and regulate the use of such chemicals.

  2. I really like your take on this, that even if your doctor gave you this information, there would be nothing you can do about it because they would not know what to do about it.

You are right in thinking we need better direction and understanding of what having these chemicals inside of us really means, as opposed to just knowing that we have them inside of ourselves.
